Happy New Year!

Being back in the office may come as a welcome break after the festivities. After all, there are only so many mince pies one can eat, and all the turkey has gone.

But how many of us are really pleased to be back in the office, ready to set new challenges for the year ahead? How many of us sat on the sofa on Sunday evening having a little sob that the holidays had come to an end? How many of us were filled with dread of the thought of another 12 months working in that same team and with that manager? I bet that more than one of you has thought about updating your CV/résumé!

Having a break from the daily treadmill of work allows us time to reflect. It gives us breathing time to ask questions such as:

  • Do I really want to be doing the same thing for the next 12 months?
  • What would I prefer to be doing?
  • (Should I really eat another mince pie?)
  • What would I prefer to be doing which would still mean I could pay the mortgage/eat/go on holiday?
  • What are the main parts of my job that I don’t like? Why?
  • What are the parts of the job I do like? Why?
  • (Should I really eat another mince pie?)
  • Who do I enjoy working with? Why?
  • Who don’t I like working for? Why?
  • (Why are there only orange creams left in the chocolate tub?)
  • Who would I like to work with? Why?

The key to enjoying our daily work is to: find people that we work well with; to work with those who complement us, and to be allocated the type of work that we enjoy, are good at and are engaged in.

How can we make this a reality? Start by finding out your behavioural strengths and weaknesses. Then ask those that you work with to feedback too. Why? Because then you will be able to tell your manager the types of work that you are best suited to, and you will be able to tell your co-workers what you can bring to the working relationship.

How? By using the language of Belbin Team Roles. Using the gold-standard tool in workplace behaviour will stand you in good stead for the next 12 months. Just imagine if the rest of your team did this too...
